State govt increases liquor prices; online sales permitted

State government has increased the liquor prices by Rs.10 for normal quality and Rs.20 for medium and premium quality from May 7 onwards.

Chennai : As per a government release, excise duty on the foreign liquor produced in India has been increased by 15%, by the TN government. As a result of this the MRP of regular quality 180 ml liquor will be increased by Rs.10;the MRP of medium and premium quality 180 ml liquor bottles will be raised by Rs.20, with effect from May 7,2020 onwards.

The Tamil Nadu government had recently made the decision to reopen TASMACs on May 7, citing the reason that people in the border districts were trespassing into the neighbouring states to buy liquor.

Amid criticism from opposition parties and public, the State government is clear of reopening the TASMACs tomorrow with few restrictions like social distancing, one liquor bottle one kerson and time slots for various age groups. The last minute price hike of liquor has raised the eyebrows of the tipplers.

In a recent announcement, the governmet has also permitted online sales of liquor.
