New Delhi: Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala will continue to receive widespread rainfall on Friday, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
This is a consequence of the Cyclone Nanda making a landfall near Cuddalore during the early hours of Friday morning.
After making the landfall, the cyclone is moving towards west-northwest direction. This will lead to rainfall in southern Karnataka, including Bengaluru, said private weather forecaster Skymet on its website on Thursday.
It has been raining in Chennai and parts of coastal Tamil Nadu since Thursday evening because of the cyclone. Thunder showers also lashed isolated parts of Kerala and Puducherry on Thursday. According to the IMD, wind squalls at 65 km per hour lashed along and off the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts on Thursday, leading to rough and very rough sea conditions.
Similar conditions will prevail on Friday but with lower intensity. Scattered rain will occur from Saturday onwards in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry .
Kerala will continue to receive widespread rainfall on Saturday, but the intensity will lessen from Sunday.
Dr S.Balachandran, deputy director of meteorology at IMD Chennai, said “People should not panic as the intensity of thundershowers lashing Tamil Nadu will not cause any major harm.”
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry coast.
“Northeast monsoon has remained subdued until now. Heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Kerala will bring relief to rice farmers who were unable to provide irrigation earlier.” said N. Chattopadhyay, deputy director general, agricultural meteorology division, IMD.
The northeast monsoon is important for Tamil Nadu since it receives 48% of its annual rainfall during this season.
