Tirupur: Small onion is cultivated in about 40,000 acres of land in Udumalai, Gudimangalam, Madathukulam unions of Tirupur district.
The area under cultivation has been declining drastically in the last few years due to factors including non-availability of adequate price for small onions and increase in cost of cultivation.
In this situation, the price of small onions is increasing due to lack of supply to Udumalai market.
This means that the small onion, which used to be sold at Rs 60-70 per kg a few weeks ago, is now being sold at Rs 185 per kg and Rs 7,400 per 40 kg bag on auction basis depending on the quality of well-bred onions stocked in the market. The housewives are in for a rude shock due to the steep rise in the price of small onions, which are considered to be important in cooking.
