The sericulture collects egg sets from the egg production centres and rears them for up to 5 days in the young worm rearing grounds and supplied to the farmers. The sericulture plots are ready for sale after full growth and nesting in 21 days.

Ramesh, a farmer from Kottamangalam near Udumalpet, had bought silkworms from Narikalpatti Annai Ilampuzhu sericulture centre at Narikalpatti in Dindigul district.

Now, the white silk farmers are in for a rude shock as 80 per cent of the 100 per cent silkworms have died due to poor quality silkworms.

In this regard, the white silk farmers said, “We are cultivating silk in the midst of another severe difficulty. While the silkworms were purchased from the chawkie rearing centre. At present, 80 per cent of the worms have been destroyed and the quality of the cocoons has been completely damaged, causing losses to the farmers to the tune of lakhs of rupees.
Similarly, in the surrounding areas of Udumalpet, farmers have suffered losses due to the sale of sub-standard silkworms at various places. Therefore, the concerned Sericulture Department officials should conduct a proper inspection of the private chawkie rearing centres and take steps to provide good quality eggs to the farmers. Moreover, the white silk farmers of Udumalpet have urged the government to provide adequate relief to the affected wen silk farmers.â€
