Coimbatore: Government of Tamil Nadu as part of the National Animal Disease Control
Program of the Department of Animal husbandry and Dairying is set to begin a special vaccination drive for the cattle in the state.
The vaccination drive is carried out in specification to the 'Komari' viral infection affecting livestock across the country and this special drive will begin on March 1 and ends on March 21.
While Tamil Nadu has a population of about 92 lakh cattle, of which Coimbatore holds about 2,64,000 cattle.
Out of the Total population about 2,37,000 cattle are identified to be eligible for the vaccination.
Accordingly, the drive will be carried ahead by 86 groups headed by 91 veterinarians who will visit the villages directly to provide the vaccination at their place.
R.Perumalsamy, Regional Joint Director, Animal Husbandry department, Coimbatore District told ‘Simplicity’ “that the vaccination is not a recent effort. It was initiated years ago but its progress was delayed due to the Covid-19 outbreakâ€.
The target numbers were selected under the criteria that the calf should be older than 4 months and each livestock will be vaccinated with a separate needle to ensure its safety.
“It was informed that blood samples of a few cattle will be taken both before vaccination and post-vaccination to analyse the immunity rate among the livestock and monitor the rate of disease exemption. The government will supply the adequate vaccinations produced by Brilliant Pharmaceuticals under various norms and quality checks†he said.
