With Tamil Nadu being the major producer and consumer of tomato, brinjal and bhindi, the TN-IAM Project-funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore has developed a market advisory for vegetables.
Coimbatore: The TN-IAM Project-funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore has developed a market advisory for vegetables. Tamil Nadu is the major producer and consumer of tomato, brinjal and bhindi.
Tomato
According to the Third Advance Estimate of Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare (2021-22), the area under tomato cultivation is 0.54 lakh hectares with a production of 16.17 lakh tons in Tamil Nadu. The major tomato-producing districts in Tamil Nadu are Krishnagiri, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Dindigul, Theni and Tirupur.
At present, tomato arrivals to the Coimbatore wholesale market arrive from surrounding villages especially Kinathukadavu, Chavadi, Mathampatti, Thondamuthur, Periyanaickenpalayam and Udumalpet of Tamil Nadu, and also from the Mysore region of Karnataka. According to a trade source, the tomato arrival to the market has decreased because of price fall in the last season, rainfall and climate change, and there is shortage in supply of tomatoes.
Brinjal
According to the Third Advance Estimate of Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare (2021-22), the area under brinjal cultivation is 0.24 lakh hectares with a production of 3.12 lakh tons in Tamil Nadu. The major producers of brinjal in Tamilnadu are Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tiruvannamalai, Dindigul, Tiruppur and Vellore districts. As per trade sources, current arrivals are from Mathampatti, Alandurai, Natchipalayam, Alandurai,Kuppanoor, Thondamuthur, Puluvampatti and Mysore district of Karnataka.
Bhindi
According to the Third Advance Estimate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare (2021-22), the bhindi area under cultivation in Tamil Nadu is 0.25 lakh hectares with production of 2.41 lakh tons.The major producers of bhindi in Tamil Nadu are Salem, Theni, Dharmapuri, Thiruvallur, Coimbatore, Madurai, Dindigul, Tirupur and Krishnagiri districts. As per trade sources, most of the bhindi arrivals are from Mathampatti, Alandurai, Natchipalayam, Alandurai, Kuppanoor, Thondamuthur, Puluvampatti.
The Price Forecasting Scheme team has analyzed the past 12 years prices of tomato, brinjal and bhindi that prevailed in Oddanchathiram and Coimbatore Uzhavar shandies. As per the results of the analysis, the farm gate price of good quality tomato during harvest (March - April 2023) would be around Rs. 21-23 per kg. Farm gate prices of good quality brinjal will rule around Rs. 23-25 per kg and bhendi will rule around Rs. 22-24 per kg respectively, with the price expected to go up due to extended monsoon. Hence, farmers are advised to take appropriate marketing decisions accordingly.
