Coimbatore: "Cauvery Calling Movement, which has planted 1 lakh saplings in just a period of two months is a pioneer and a guide for the nation," saidShanmuga Sundaram, Member of Parliament of Pollachi Constituency while attending the closing ceremony of the 'Pasumai Thondamuthur' project today at Mathipalayam, Coimbatore.
Cauvery calling is a movement launched by Sadhguru to support farmers in planting 242 crore trees and revitalizing the Cauvery river.
The release said, "In line with the objectives of the movement, the 'Pasumai Thondamuthur' project was launched on 3rd August this year to increase the green cover and raise the groundwater level in the Thondamuthur area of Coimbatore. The project was jointly implemented by the Cauvery Calling Movement and Thondamuthur Rotary Club, under which the farmers of Thondamuthur have set a record by planting 1 lakh timber saplings in just two months."
Shanmuga Sundaram highlighted the country’s challenges in meeting the UN-mandated green cover of 33% of the total geographical area. “There is a law to plant 10 trees for every tree cut for road widening. The highway sector is facing various challenges to implement it,†spoke the MP drawing the contrast and the significance of the success of the project. Subsequently, he felt, the “Cauvery Calling Movement is a pioneer and a guide for the nation. This project should be extended not only to Thondamuthur but also to other parts of Coimbatore district.â€
The State Field Coordinator of Cauvery Calling Movement, Tamilmaran shared, “According to our many years of experience, most of the trees planted in public places do not grow due to various reasons. This is why we are carrying out the work of planting trees in farmers' lands. More than 90 percent of saplings planted in agricultural lands grow into useful trees. This improves the economy of the farmers along with the environment.â€
Explaining the execution model of the project, he revealed, “Our field workers visited every village in Thondamuthur to explain the model to the farmers. We started our work with a target of planting one lakh trees. However, farmers have expressed their desire to plant 3 lakh trees. This is the biggest success of this project.â€
Congratulating the people involved in the successful completion of the project, District Governor of Rotary Club Rajmohan Nair expressed his happiness on the active work carried out by the field workers of the Cauvery Calling movement. Explaining about the project, he added, “Under this project, we have provided one lakh saplings to the farmers free of charge. Apart from that, the field workers have analyzed the requirements of the farmers, the nature of soil and water, and recommended trees accordingly. Also, we have given guidance to the farmers on the proper planting of saplings.â€
President of Thondamuthur Rotary Club Arvind Aruswamy delivered the welcome speech in the ceremony. District Director of Rotary Club Mayilsamy, Deputy Governor Sanjay Shah, Representative of Save Soil Movement Valluvan, Velliangiri Farmer Producer Company President Kumar, including many executives of the Rotary Club, participated in the closing ceremony.
As part of the ceremony, a timber sapling planting event was also held at the farmer Gandhi Prakash's agricultural land. Students of Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science and Isha volunteers participated in the plant saplings.
