The United Farmers Association of Tamil Nadu has urged the State Government to present a separate budget for the agriculture sector.
A separate budget will help address the long-pending demands of the entire farming community and meet its aspirations, said C. Vaiyapuri, president of the association, in a statement issued here recently.
Congratulating Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on re-assuming office after an emphatic win in the recent Assembly elections, Mr. Vaiyapuri pleaded with her to accord priority for bio-farming techniques. The dry land cultivation should be well designed.
With abundant availability of manpower resources, any attempt towards total farm mechanisation should be downsized in a phased manner. Instead, the government should come forward to provide the subsidy to farmers to purchase bullocks and carts.
He demanded the government to enact new legislation in favour of adopting crop pattern. This will enable in saving ground water. The statement also urged the government to do away with all road laying projects inside the reserve forests and execute schemes for conserving rain water. This will prevent straying of wild animals into abutting villages and damage crops.
He also demanded the Chief Minister to revive the farmers’ high power committee introduced by late MGR when he was at the helm of affairs in the State in 1977.
