A team of Cardiologists led by Dr.Prasanth Vaijyanath of KMCH have performed Asia’s first Heterotopic heart transplantation at KMCH at Coimbatore.

According to Dr. Prasanth Vaijyanath, the team had performed the procedure on a beating heart using the Direct Pulmonary Artery Anastomosis technique.

A 45-year old patient Vignesh (name changed) had undergone this procedure because of the high lung pressure he was suffering from.
It was a hard and demanding surgery as the patient’s heart had only 10% ejection fraction. He was transplanted with a heart of a female donor, which though smaller in size proved a perfect fit in the cavity. The patient will have now XX chromosome added to XY chromosome.

Dr. G.Nalla G. Palanisamy, Chairman of KMCH congratulated the cardio surgery team which successfully performed the operation.
