Tirupur: In a bid to ignite young minds with the wonders of the universe, Udumalai Galileo Science Institute, in collaboration with Udumalai Tejas Rotary Society and Udumalai Environment Society, marked the ongoing International Space Week with an enlightening astronomy workshop. The event, spanning from October 4th to 10th, unfolded its educational wings at Anthiyur Kamalam Arts and Science College on October 7th, captivating the curiosity of school and college students alike.
The workshop served as a platform for budding astronomers, offering hands-on experiences and practical insights into various astronomical phenomena. Through engaging demonstrations and interactive sessions, students delved into the mysteries of the solar system, understanding the intricate dance of planets around the sun and unraveling the phases of the moon. The workshop also provided simplified explanations on star formations, sundials, ball glass magic mirrors, and techniques to calculate local noon time and accurate directions using the sun’s shadow.

Under the guidance of the Galileo Science Institute Coordinator, Kannabran, and the expertise of Harini, a student from GVG Arts and Science College, attendees were shown how to craft scientific instruments, fostering a sense of scientific inquiry and self-reliance. The event received added stature with the presence of Kamalam Arts and Science College Principal, Brinda, who presided over the proceedings.
A significant highlight of the workshop was the valuable insight provided by Udumalai Environment Association President, Mani, who emphasized the crucial need to protect wildlife, especially the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve. He underscored the responsibility of the community in safeguarding the natural habitat and the wild inhabitants.

The session drew to a close with a note of gratitude from Geethamani, the coordinator of the College Science Club, expressing thanks to all participants and organizers. The event not only celebrated the marvels of space but also instilled a sense of environmental stewardship among the attendees, marking a step forward in nurturing a generation passionate about science and conservation.
