Evolution in motion: Frequent phone use causes small horn like spikes growing in young kids’ skull, says study

In a rather bizarre, terrifying and astonishing study that was published last year, researchers in Australia have found that horn like spikes have grown in many young adults at the back of their skulls.

The study was conducted with around 1200 people of various age groups by the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. They have found evidence that frequent use of mobile devices could be fundamentally altering our physiology. Specifically, they found evidence of horn like spikes growing from the back of the neck near the head.

Here’s what the researchers say is happening: Frequent users of mobile devices regularly tilt their heads forward to view them. That shifts the weight of the head from the spine to muscles in the back of the head, which causes bones to grow in the tendons and ligaments. That results in a horn-like spur that grows from the base of the skull.

“Our findings raise a concern about the future musculoskeletal health of the young adult population and reinforce the need for prevention intervention through posture improvement education,” the scientists noted in the report, which was originally published a year ago, but has come to more prominent attention recently after the BBC came out with a story about how our physiology is changing.

Though this is terrifying and one that has to be addressed with the current generation of mobile users, this is also evolution is motion.

Evolution of life

Evolution is change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successivegenerations. These characteristics are the expressions of genes that are passed on from parent to offspring during reproduction. Different characteristics tend to exist within any given population as a result of mutationgenetic recombination and other sources of genetic variation. Evolution occurs when evolutionary processes such as natural selection (including sexual selection) andgenetic drift act on this variation, resulting in certain characteristics becoming more common or rare within a population. It is this process of evolution that has given rise to biodiversity at every level of biological organisation, including the levels of species, individual organisms andmolecules

The scientific community has now established that life on earth evolved over billions of years from simple single cell organisms to complex cell colonies which are biologically and neurologically aware like Human beings. This particular study which has found bone spikes growing is one such physiological change that shows evolution in action.
