To celebrate Pi Day (3/14), we’re bringing you a fixed gear bicycle with a handmade carbon fiber frame that’s in the shape of the π symbol. The Pi Bike was designed and built by Martijn Koomen and Tadas Maksimovas over the course of a year after being inspired by an illustration of a pi bike by Malaysian artist, Tang Yau Hoong.

After seeing the drawing, the pair set out to take a two-dimensional drawing and turn it into a fully functioning bicycle. They began by sketching out the frame, tweaking it, and testing several scale models in different materials before choosing the frame size and shape. They made molds to cast the frame in resin and then sanded it down and assembled the bike. Then, they had to made new molds to cast the final bike in a stronger carbon fiber before reassembling the bike.

After a long, hard road, The Pi Bike is launching today, Pi Day, with the help of WE ARE Pi. It also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday so they let him take a spin to celebrate.
