Quick tips for a free bedroom makeover

If you want to give your bedroom a stylish makeover, you don’t have to spend thousands of rupees on a renovation. That’s right! You can add style and flair to your room without spending any money at all. Check out these easy to implement ideas which are quick and inexpensive and can make a dramatic difference to your sleeping space…for free!

Rearrange your bedroom furnitureIt is the fastest and easiest way to give your room a new look and feel.

Change the angle of your bed or exchange the side table of the room with the drawer stand kept in the drawing room. Small changes have the largest impact and they can change the whole dynamics of the room without spending a single penny.

Less is moreCut the clutter and let the attention reach a focal point of your choice (a showpiece or a beautiful vase). Buy some drawers and dividers and start organising.

Display some collectables and hide some. Rotating collectables is a great way to give your room a makeover once in a while. Being minimalistic is the new décor trend.

Light up your sleeping areaYou don’t have to wait for Diwali or Christmas to use string lights in your room.

Playing with lights can give your room a makeover without spending a fortune. Hang street lights above your headboard or use them as task lighting and hang them above the study table in the corner.

Display photographs on the wallOf course, you knew that using photographs to decorate a room is a good idea. But if you find framing photographs too expensive, you can display them for free. The trick is to ditch the frame and paste only the pictures in the wall by arranging them in an interesting pattern.

You can also use string lights and use them to hand a bunch of pictures to give your room a cute display.

Upgrade curtainsNo, we are not talking about replacing the curtains of the room, but we are suggesting you upgrade the existing curtains. Applying braid, tape or trim to the leading edge of the curtains will accentuate the height of your bedroom. Adding a valance or cornice adds a royal feeling to the room while keeping draperies pulled together.

Recover old furnitureIf you don’t have the budget to replace old (maybe torn) furniture, you can give them a new look by using slipcovers. They hide a multitude of sins while giving the old furniture an all-new feel. You can use slipcovers contrasting to the colours of your wall, or you can match them with curtains.

Contrasting colours can do wondersPaint your baseboard in contrasting colours like brown, dark grey or a tinge of black. A little contrast can make a huge difference and will make the wall pop. If you are looking for a little more drama, change the colour of your lamp shades to black too! Line the shades of the lamp with gold paper and get lovely pools of light. All you need is a tin of paint and you are sorted.

Focus it upIf your room is lacking a natural attention grabber such as a television or a photo frame, create one. Pair a mirror, artwork or a photo frame with a bench, shelf or a console table to create a focal point in the room.

How about a canopy?Let a piece of curtain or an old shift act as a makeshift canopy. Select the fabric of your choice and use curtain rods to attach it to the wall in the form of a canopy. Hanging the canopy panel from the roof accentuates the bedroom’s architecture and makes your room look cosy.

Glassware can do wondersHave tons of unused glassware because rest of the set is broken? Use mismatched drinking glasses and kettle to make beautiful vases. Group glasses together to make beautiful decoratives for your bedroom window or keep them on the side table.

Headboards décorBored of the cold, old headboard? Give it a new shine by draping a panel of beautiful fabric over it. You can use old runners or any unused cloth and cut it according to the size of the headboard. Tuck the end of the fabric under to mattress to help the cloth panel stay in place.

With some basic supplies and a little imagination, you can transform your bedroom into a chic sanctuary of your own. Get to work now!
