Coimbatore: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Tamil Nadu, doctors at the ESI Hospital in Coimbatore launched a one-day programme for final year MBBS students of Coimbatore Medical College, PSG Medical College and Karpagam Medical College to prepare them for their exams.
N Tamil Selvan, Professor and Head of the Department for General Surgery at ESI Hospital launched the programme on November 19. Speaking to SimpliCity about the programme, N Tamil Selvan highlighted that the surgical programme would have a prolonged impact on the students and help them prepare for their future.
"The surgical programme was titled 'Surgexcel 2022' and as many as 40 professors, including retired ones, from Coimbatore, Palakkad, Thanjavur, Tirupur and Salem participated and examined 320 students from four medical colleges in the city for the surgical practice. We aimed to launch the programme in 2020, but the pandemic struck, and we had to drop the idea. We have successfully launched the programme which we will conduct every year for the Under Graduate students,†he added.
It is the first time in the State that a hospital has launched a programme for UG students. “There used to be programmes for PG students, but it is the first time we launched it for UG students. Also, in cities like Chennai and Madurai, only a few college students get this programme. Still, in Coimbatore, students from four medical colleges get this, making it again a first-of-its-kind in the city,†reiterated Dr. Tamil Selvan.
"Professors from the same college, at the University level and from the State, examine these students and question them, which will let students develop ideas and prepare," he further added.
A batch of 10 teams presented a short and long-forms surgical case before the professors and doctors.
The programme was launched under the guidance of the Dean Dr. Raveendran and Dr. T Ravikumar.
