Over 1200 students received the Mahatma Gandhi Merit Scholarship at the centenary celebrations held at the Kumaraguru College commemorating the 100th birth year of its founder, Arutchlevar Dr Mahalingam.
Coimbatore: Over 1200 students received the Mahatma Gandhi Merit Scholarship at the centenary celebrations held at the Kumaraguru College commemorating the 100th birth year of its founder, Arutchlevar Dr Mahalingam.
Kumaraguru Institutions has been hosting the birth centenary celebrations of its Founder Arutchelvar Dr.N.Mahalingam with a series of events and projects from 17 to 27 March 2022 to inspire students, staff, visitors and the public to emulate his ideals and values.
Arutchelvar valued the pursuit of merit, perseverance and achievements in students greatly and was keen on nurturing these attributes in them. It was in this light that the idea of the Mahatma Gandhi Merit Scholarship was conceived during 2006-07. Since then, Kumaraguru Institutions has rewarded thousands of its students with a scholarship of INR 10,000 each, based on various aspects of their performance in academics, sports and other special achievements.
In the previous year, more than 1000 students received the scholarship, and a sum of Rs.1.15 Crore was awarded.

This year as part of the Centenary Celebrations of the Founder Arutchelvar Dr. N. Mahalingam, more than 1200 students have received the Mahatma Gandhi Merit scholarship of 1.2 Crore for excellence in Academics and Extra Curricular activities on 27 March 2022 at the Ramanandha Adigalar Auditorium, Kumaraguru Institutions.
Dr. B. K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Chairman, Kumaraguru Institutions addressed the gathering by quoting that Dr. R. Velraj, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University is a very eminent, renowned scientist and a great leader in leading Anna University as a Vice-Chancellor.
Mentioning that Kumaraguru is honored by Dr. R. Velraj's presence, he also mentioned that Kumaraguru is a social asset, and the preliminary aim of the trustees is to ensure that the best of education would be offered to people in rural areas. This thought rooting from the very founder Arutchelvar Dr. N. Mahalaingam has manifested in many forms in thoughts and action leading to the establishment of the Mahatma Gandhi Merit Scholarship Awards in 2006-07 in the name of the Father of the Nation as wished by Arutchelvar and Former President Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.
This award, being one of its kind to encourage students with scholastic performance in academics, sports, national organizations and everything that helps one to set a higher benchmark for oneself and the community one lives in, would be a great legacy from the life of Arutchelvar, an ardent Gandhian throughout his life. In the centennial year, the Chairman urged the students to take a resolution to be more responsible, hardworking, spread their wings and e magnify the amount of impact we can make.
Dr. R. Velraj, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University recollected the powerful speech that was given by Dr. B. K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Chairman, Kumaraguru Institutions in the South India Vice-Chancellor meet. He then shared some of his learnings and principles to the audience. He said that skill and attitude are the most prominent factors a human must excel. "If a small portion is learned with keen depth, then nothing can stop you from making wonders" says Dr.R.Velraj.
He further went on to explain the importance of utilizing research funding and stimulating learning. He concluded by saying "thoughts become actions and actions become reality!" and wished luck to all the students for their further endeavors.
