First edition of TEDxPSGRKCW on 'Women Empowerment'

The public, traders and workers are happy that the public transport service to Tamil Nadu and Kerala has started after one and a half years. They said that they were having difficulty in getting to the urban areas.


Coimbatore: The first TEDxPSGRKCW event was organised on Saturday, 27 November 2021 from 3.00pm to 6.00pm.

The theme for the first TEDxPSGRKCW event was chosen as ‘Women Empowerment’ and the venue was the Chandra Seminar Hall at the college campus. As per the TED guidelines, audience was limited to 100, comprising 50 students, 30 faculty members and 20 Invitees.

The following were the five speakers at the first TEDxPSGRKCW event:

Rajashree Natarajan, CEO, Cognizant Foundation, Chennai

Kalki Subramaniam, Entrepreneur, Poet, Actor and LGBT Activist, and Founder, Sahodari Foundation, Pollachi

Deepthi Ravula, CEO, WE Hub, Government of Telangana, Hyderabad

Shobhana Kumar, Writer, Poet, and Founder, Small Differences, Coimbatore



The programme began with prayer, followed by a welcome address by Professor S Balasubramanian, Director, GRG Centre for Advanced Studies and opening remarks by Chairperson, Dr Nandini Rangaswamy.



The speakers eloquently spoke with different perspectives and ideas on women empowerment.



Shobhana Kumar spoke on the importance and role of sisterhood in women empowerment.



Dr Kezevino Aram spoke on the importance of health for women and children, and the role of agency in women empowerment.



Deepthi Ravula spoke on the central theme of ‘You’ where she eloquently articulated how the onus of empowerment lies with women and urged women to focus on opportunities rather than challenges.



This was followed by Rajashree Natarajan’s talk on the need to break the glass ceiling of self-limiting beliefs. She explained through examples the self-limiting beliefs that hold women back, and how to break those beliefs.



The final speaker, Kalki Subramaniam spoke on the rights of transgender persons (transwomen) who identify themselves as women. She struck an emotional chord with the audience when narrating the ordeal of transgender women face in society and sensitized the audience on their rights.



Dr Vandana Madhavkumar offered the concluding remarks. The programme ended at 6.00pm with a high tea.
