The Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE) has issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) on preventive measures to be followed while conducting Class 12 practical examinations, amidst the second COVID-19 wave.

According to it, the laboratories at schools have been asked to sanitize their premises along with all equipment, before and after conducting practical examinations of each batch.

A waiting room is also to be arranged for the next batch of students, which ought to be sanitized with adequate drinking water facility.

To avoid overcrowding, the DGE guidelines restrict students in large numbers and have asked the number of students per batch to be determined earlier, ensuring that an area of 4m2 per student is available while working on equipment. Besides, the DGE has also advised the exam centres to ensure strict compliance to social distancing with masks and sanitizing often. However, the students have also been instructed not to touch any flammable laboratory equipment after sanitizing.

All students and teachers are to be screened using thermal screening, while the windows and doors will be open for proper air circulation.

The guidelines have also allowed students with symptoms to appear for practicals on a separate date, which will be announced by the concerned Chief Educational Officer (CEO).

CEOs are also instructed to conduct the practical examinations at nearby schools if the designated centre falls under containment zones.

Additionally, the guidelines also come to rescue of the students by providing usage of burette or measuring cylinder or 20ml test tube, in which pippete is actually used in volumetric analysis.

The accurate titre value in this analysis might not be reached with the absence of pippete, and for this the guidelines mention that the examiner has to provide the range of titre value.

Instead of using microscopic slides, students are allowed to use hand drawn pictures or photographs. Determination of the wavelength of a composite light by normal incidence method using diffraction grating and spectrometer experiment should also avoided as per the guidelines.
