Kumaraguru Institutions has launched 'Centre for Weavers', Bhavani at Kumaraguru Institute of Agriculture on Martyrs Day.
Coimbatore: In a press release it was stated that ,"Kumaraguru Institutions marches forward to venture into yet another new project with the launch of Centre for Weavers, Bhavani at Kumaraguru Institute of Agriculture (KIA), Erode on January 30th (Martyrs Day), as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and other veteran freedom fighters.
The multihued Jamakkalam, which is a blanket or carpet made from cotton, art silk, wool or jute yarn with woven crossbars, has thrived for more than two centuries due to its distinct style, affordability and sturdiness. The Jamakkalam has been recognized as a Geographical indication by the Government of India in 2005-06.
In order to enhance productivity, offer design innovation through technological intervention along with skill upgradation and increase the market scope through collaborative business models, The Centre for Weavers, Bhavani has been inaugurated by Shankar Vanvarayar, President, Kumaraguru Institutions at KIA campus in Apakodal, Erode district.
Diversifying Jamakkalam into different other deliverables such as Yoga mats, Bed Spreads, Wall Hangings, Handbags, Heavy Cloth big shopper bags, Table runners, Laptop Covers and myriad other products and using sustainable fibres like jute, kenaf, raw silk, organic cotton and natural dyes are being thought of at present by a vibrant team encompassing fabric, quality, design, innovation and marketing is striving to achieve innovation and diversification. This is an enormous move towards the revival of the indigenous handloom legacy." It said.
