First satellite to be launched by a private college.
Coimbatore: Students from Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology are gearing up for the launch of an indigenously built satellite. The ground station at the college premises will be inaugurated tomorrow by ISRO Chairman virtually.
Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology Chairman, Dr. S Thangavelu addressed the media about this new innovative project and said that"We are proud to announce that on behalf of our institution we have designed an indigenous satellite named "Shri Shakthi Sat" which is a PSLV C-51 Satellite. The launch event will be held on February 22nd from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
Before that ISRO Chairman Sivan will be inaugurating the ground station established inside our college premises tomorrow on January 27th. With just 9 satellites sent into space by educational institutions. We are the first private college to launch a satellite. The work for this satellite was started 10 years ago with the support and guidance of scientists, faculties and students.
This satellite is designed for IOT (Internet Of Things) and also for communication. This would cater the needs of academic purposes and it would be helpful to many institutions across the globe.
The total weight of this satellite is 500 Kg. Our satellite would be launched along with two other satellites designed by educational institutions from Chennai and Nagpur. The total project cost is about rupees 2 crores. Each day this satellite will come above India 2 times and another two times during the night. Our satellite will communicate with 300 other small satellites in space.
The active life of this satellite is 6 months. But it would send signals till 3 years. We are planning to launch one more satellite within the next year. So far we have filed to avail 29 patents. In that a debris management satellite project is a main highlight and is expected to have big opportunity in the future.
This project has changed the mindset of college students in learning. Students are very much interested and are ready towork day and night." He said.
