Coimbatore: A decomposed male body was found in a canal near Karamarathur in Coimbatore district on Sunday, triggering an investigation by the Alandurai Police.
According to police, the body was found around 2 p.m. near a canal opposite the Karamarathur Bus Stand within the jurisdiction of Alandurai Police Station. Lokesh (40)
a local resident, noticed a foul smell coming from the canal area and later found a male body lying in a decomposed condition and immediately alerted the police.
Police personnel rushed to the spot and secured the area for examination. A forensic team led by the Assistant Director of Forensic Sciences inspected the body. During the preliminary examination, forensic experts indicated that the death may have occurred approximately three to four days ago.
Authorities stated that no visible external injuries or suspicious marks were found on the body during the initial inspection. However, the exact cause of death will be determined only after a post-mortem examination and further investigation.
Identity cards recovered from the scene suggest that the deceased may be Mafijul Mondal (37), son of Saiful Mondal, a native of Ashudi in Barasat Sadar, North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Police are currently working to confirm the identity and trace his family members.
Based on a complaint lodged by the Village Administrative Officer of Thennamanallur, the Alandurai Police have registered a case under Section 194 of the BNSS in Crime No. 97/2026.
