Coimbatore, January 8
In a bid to create awareness on safe driving and following traffic regulations, the students of Ganga School of Nursing have joined hands with the City Traffic Police to educate the citizens on responsible driving. This initiave is organised as a part of on-going Coimbatore Vizha.

Around 165 students and 42 staff of Ganga Nursing College took part in the initiative that was flagged off by Commissioner of Police, K. Periaiah in the presence of Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic), Sujith Kumar. Dr. S. Rajasekaran, Director of Orthopedic and Spine Surgery, Ganga Hospital and organisers of Coimbatore Vizha'.

"Adhering to traffic rules is not a choice but mandatory. The spike in accident rates could be addressed only if public drive sensibly. Everyday there are 300 new vehicle registrations enrolled in the city of Coimbatore. And, annually there are more than one lakh new vehicles getting added to the existing vehicle population. Despite congestion and lack of state-of-art roads, if people could drive sensibly and adhere to traffic rules we could considerably minimize the rate of road accidents", said Mr. Periaiah.

"Not just one or two, there are seven exit and entry points to the city. If people could patiently and sensibly drive through then they would be no traffic congestions at all. Impatient and rash driving could turn fatal. And, the city traffic police have installed CCTV cameras at all exit and entry poinbts to monitor traffic law breakers.", he added.
And, in the recent times complaints on youngsters using Race Course, Saravanampatti and Pollachi roads as race tracks have emerged. Stringent legal action would be initiated on them for causing public nuisance and speeding", COP warned.

"Negligence and non-adherence of traffic rules are the major reasons for road traffic accidents", said Dr. S. Rajasekaran. He also stressed that wearing of helmets and seat belts could help save lives and reduce the risk of fatality.

The students held placards carrying senasational captions like "Drive safely, someone is waiting for you at home...." from Stanes Higher Secondary School and rallied through prominent locations to instill awareness among the drivers on the importance to follow traffic rules.

Responsible drivers who wore helmet and stopped by signals were appreciated by Mr. Periaiah during the initiave. He also motivated the drivers of two-wheelers and four-wheelers to practize safe driving in their everyday life.

Stopping by traffic signals, wearing helmets and seat belts at all times, refrain from using cellphone while driving among other basic rules were highlighted during the initiative.
