Coimbatore Corporation submits proposal to delimit and redraw wards

Coimbatore Dec 25

With Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation submitting a proposal to the Coimbatore District Collector T.N. Hariharan to delimit and redraw the wards, the Collector might soon call for objections, additions and deletions from the general public and representatives of civic associations, said Corporation sources.

The boundaries of the existing 100 wards in the city have been redrawn and divided into five zones. While the number of wards have not been increased, smaller wards have been merged and bigger wards have been divided into two or three to ensure population of each ward does not exceed a specific figure.

As the delimitation exercise was carried out on the basis of 2011 census which found the city's population to be 15,84,719, each ward will have a minimum population of 15,847 with a maximum deviation of ten percent, said a Corporation official.

“We tried to ensure that there is only 10 percent deviation, but in many locations it could not be done," he added.

As part of this exercise, town planning officials held a meeting with ward officials and conducted surveys after meeting several households in each ward, he noted.

Ward 41 in Ganapathy area is the biggest ward in the Coimbatore Corporation with a population of 49,138 while Ward 31 in Saravanampatti area with a population of 4,882 is the smallest." Because of this disparity, development works in the wards are affected and such disparity will not be visible anymore. Funds will be equally distributed among wards with equal population and the administration will also become easy,” he asserted.

After seeking public opinion on the delimitation proposal submitted by the Corporation, the collector will forward his report to State Election Commission and the State Government.
