Political parties in the city and nation protest against denomination of high value currency

With the aim of curbing the circulation of black money, the Modi Government took a bold step and announced the demonetisation of high-value currency. The Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 currency notes were banned over-night and this has received a mixed reaction from the public and from the political circles.

Today, protests and demonstrations condemning the decision of the Modi government are being hosted in several parts of our country by several political parties including the opposition party. Back home in Coimbatore, members and representatives of various political parties staged a demonstration against the demonetisation of high-value currency before the Tahsildar's office for the Coimbatore South. It has been reported that over 300 persons participated in this protest.

One of the protesters said that the public is suffering due to the demonetisation of Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 denomination currency. People are unable to get the exact change for Rs.2,000 rupee currency notes, due to non-availability of the new Rs.500 currency notes.

In another protest, members of the various Communist parties gathered in front of the BSNL office near the Coimbatore Collector’s office to protest against the denomination of high-value currency. Over 100 people participated in this protest.

The neighbouring Kerala state is experiencing a total shut-down today and business has come to a standstill in this region. Owing to this movement of buses to this state are impacted.
