Singanallur water bund gets a palm tree nursery!

On 18th June, 2016, the 'Singanallur Water Body Restoration Project' was formally flagged off by the former City Mayor P. Rajkumar and Corporation Commissioner, Dr. Vijayakarthikeyan.

The aim of the project is to extend the green cover along the buffer zones of the bund by planting native tree saplings like Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizaniaides) and palm trees along the bund.

Planting native species of trees around the buffer zone will improve water quality by trapping sediment and pollutants, create habitat for indigenous birds, insects and water creatures, dissolves the pollutants, provides shade and assist in soaking up after heavy rainfalls.

Today, 19th November, Corporation Commissioner Vijayakarthikeyan along with students and volunteers from the NGO's gathered at the Singanallur bund to inaugurate a Palm tree nursery. Time again, it's been proven that planting Palm trees across the water zones helps n soil erosion to a great extent.

The nursery will breed native palm tree saplings and in turn plant the same across the Singanallur lake bund and rest of the water bodies in the city. Promoting native tree species is also one of the important factor behind the restoration project.

Previous events related to Singanallur Water Body Restoration Project':

On 31st July, 30 volunteers from various NGOs today planted 'Vetiver' trees and 'Kora grass' along the buffer zones of the bund. Former, City Mayor P. Rajkumar flagged off the planting. Dr.K. Ramasamy, VC, TNAU also took part in this laudable initiative. He applauded the efforts of the students and volunteers who were involved in the project. Apart from reducing soil erosion, these plants after growing up will provide means of revenue too, he said.
