Rio Paralympics 2016: Mariappan, the first Indian to bag gold in high jump

Mariappan Thangavelu, a 21-year-old has made the Nation proud by winning Gold in the Rio Paralympics 2016 in men’s high jump.



Mariappan cleared a jump of 1.89 meters, at the T42 event held on 9th September 2016. He is the first Indian to bag a gold medal in high jump at the Paralympics. Mariappan hails from Salem, Tamil Nadu.

Athlete Varun Singh Bhati bagged bronze and USA’s Sam Grewe bagged silver.

The Rio Paralympics started on 7th September and will conclude on 18th September 2016. Totally, 19 athletes from India will be participating under various categories at the Rio Paralympics.
