Several parts of Coimbatore city and its outskirts received widespread rainfall as the Southwest Monsoon gained momentum, bringing relief to residents after the city witnessed only isolated showers in recent weeks.
Coimbatore: Nearly two weeks after the official onset of the Southwest Monsoon over Kerala and adjoining parts of Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore city witnessed mild to moderate rainfall on Monday, signalling a stronger monsoon presence across the region.

Although monsoon showers had been reported intermittently in the ghat sections of the district, including the Siruvani catchment areas and other western regions, the city had largely remained outside the monsoon's active influence and experienced only isolated rainfall activity over the past fortnight.
Since the onset of the Southwest Monsoon, Valparai has been the only region in Coimbatore district to witness sustained moderate rainfall. In contrast, the city and the district’s plains have largely remained outside the monsoon’s active influence, receiving only sporadic showers until the recent widespread spell.

However, after a prolonged lull, moderate showers lashed several parts of Coimbatore city, while suburban and outlying areas also recorded rainfall. The sudden change in weather brought much-needed relief to residents who had been awaiting more sustained monsoon activity within the city limits.
Meteorologists point out that while the western and ghat regions of Coimbatore district are among the earliest recipients of Southwest Monsoon showers, rainfall over the plains and urban pockets is often intermittent and influenced by local weather conditions.
The latest spell of widespread rain has raised hopes of more consistent monsoon showers in the coming days as the Southwest Monsoon continues to strengthen across western Tamil Nadu.
