Ondipudur yet to get into underground drainage network

Ward 60, comprising areas in and around Ondipudur, is without underground drainage. The Coimbatore Corporation is yet to start digging for it, even as it is about to complete the project in the city.

Sathish Kumar, a resident, says they are shocked and want to know why they have been left out. Ironically, the ward is just north of the sewage treatment plant. The fact that the ward has thickly populated localities in the old Ondipudur town has only made matters worse, he says.

Ward Councillor P. Muthusamy says that the failure to start the project in the area has to do with the fact that the work in Wards 58 and 59 that are north of Ward 60, are yet to be completed. Only once that is done and the pipelines are networked, can the work start here as the sewage from the wards has to flow through Ward 60 to the treatment plant. Mr. Muthusamy says this is unlikely to happen anytime soon and the residents may get the UGD after the Assembly election.

The ward extends from the railway line in the north to Trichy Road in the south and from Ondipudur Sungam in the west to Irugur flyover in the east. And poor water supply is another big complaint.

The residents get Pilloor water only once in 15 days. The duration of water supply is less and the pressure is not adequate enough for residents to collect the required amount to last them the 15 days, says R. Dharmarajan, a resident of Krishnamma Naidu Street.

Absence of street lights on the Irugur road resulted in the death of a motorist in the recent past, says A. Arumugam, a resident. For this, the councillor says he has asked the officials to first light up the Irugur bridge and then take up light maintenance.
