Coimbatore: Families in Coimbatore are anxiously awaiting information about four people who travelled as part of a Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage and have remained uncontactable following the flash floods that struck the Nepal-China border region.
Among those reported missing are M. Chandrasekhar, 70, a retired professor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, and his wife Punitha Chandrasekhar, 60, a retired principal of a private school in Vadavalli. Also reportedly untraceable are Gayathri Devi, a private school correspondent, and her son Srivanth, 25, who were travelling with the couple.
According to reports, they were part of a 49-member Tamil Nadu pilgrimage group that travelled through Mahadev Kailash Yatra, a travel agency based in Chromepet, Chennai. The group left Chennai on August 14 for the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage and was returning after completing the trip.
The pilgrims were reportedly undergoing immigration formalities at the Gyirong Port immigration facility on the Chinese side near the Nepal border when the flash flood struck on August 26. The flood swept through the area and communication with the group was subsequently lost.
The 49-member group comprised 22 men and 27 women from various parts of Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Madurai, Erode, Salem and other districts. Their families have been seeking information on their whereabouts as rescue and tracing efforts continue.
The disaster has left several Tamil Nadu families waiting for news of their relatives. As of August 28, at least 85 people from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry were reported to remain untraceable following the flash floods, with damaged communication infrastructure further complicating efforts to establish contact.
Authorities are continuing efforts to trace those reported missing, while families in Coimbatore remain hopeful of receiving information about the safety and whereabouts of their loved ones.
