₹7 crore revamp of city road infrastructure on the cards; tenders floated

Coimbatore, December 27

City motorists and other road users could heave a sigh of relief as the Coimbatore City Corporation is ready to relay and repair its much-battered road network.

According to CCMC Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan, a Rs.7 crore revamp project for the road infrastructure has been taken up for which tenders have already been floated.

Reliable sources told Simplicity that the tender process would come to an end in another 10 days and works would commence soon.

The rain- battered network of the corporation and other roads in the textile city have been an eyesore. Many stretches are dotted with gaping potholes and are generally in a much-battered condition.

Impassable these roads are, they are also narrow and remained unattended to for ages. They proved nightmarish for the motorists, who faced extreme hardships in the recent years.

Many appeals and petitions to the civic body to repair and relay the roads only fell on deaf ears even as many lives were lost in road accidents

“The City Corporation has at last come forward to revamp the road infrastructure and it should be done comprehensively. Broadening of road stretches should also be taken up as there are many narrow stretches, and bottlenecks posing problems for smooth movement of traffic,” says a social activist.

“Indeed, the City Corporation has not brought in any new road project in the last 20-odd years, despite the vehicle population increasing exponentially. Pavements should also be created considering the plight of pedestrians as they remain the most neglected lot of the road users,” the social activist said.
