Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Coimbatore in the forefront of service to differently - abled Children and girl children in the city.

Started in the year 1935, the Coimbatore District Branch of Red cross has now a building of its own in the heart of the city wch was constructed with the munificent donation of Rs.50,000/- by the PSG & Sons Charities, Coimbatore. The foundation stone was laid on October 1947 by her Excellency Lady Nye and declared open by her Excellency the Maharani of Bhavnagar on June 1949.



In the year 1999, the new building Complex was constructed whose idea was conceived by Shri C.P.Singh I.A.S., and made into reality by Shri G.Santhanam I.A.S. Dr.Chandrakanthi Govindarajulu, who was the Chairman for 45 years supported, guided and contributed substantially for the growth of the Indian Red Cross Society, Coimbatore District Branch.



The IRCS, Coimbatore District Branch celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in the year 2010. At present, the District Collector Shri T.N.Hariharan I.A.S., is the President of the IRCS, Coimbatore District Branch.

'DEAF' (Detection of Early deafness And prevention of Future dumbness) one of the iconic project of the IRCS, Coimbatore, helped to identify those with speech and hearing impairment. A School for Speech and Hearing Impaired Children was then started at 2/2, Mettupalayam Road, Coimbatore, with all required facilities. 

Initially the school was started with 9 children but now there are close to 50 children studying from Pre KG to X Std vouches for the  success of the initiative. Starting from 2007, 31 students who have successfully completed their X Std joined ITI, Diploma, B.S.Ec. and +2 courses. Meanwhile in 2013-2014, the school achieved yet another milestone as two of their students achieved state first & Third in 10th Std Public Examination, under the Hearing impaired Group category.

Special Features of the School:

  • Extra Curricular Activities viz. Arts & Crafts, Dance, Yoga, Games are conducted regularly.
  • Monthly Medical Check-ups for students.
  • Monthly interactive sessions with the parents.


Every National and International festivals are celebrated with pomp and zeal at the school with the thorough participation of the students.



The ‘THALIR’ a Community care home for the Girl child was inaugurated by Shri M.Karunakaran I.A.S., District Collector and President, IRCS, Coimbatore on May 2013.



This home provides shelter to 32 female children in the age group of 4 to 15 years. These Children are victims of HIV and orphaned by their parents or parents would have died from HIV infection. These Children are only affected and not infected.

Apart from shelter and food, the children are given education in English Medium with all possible opportunities to develop their capacities. Training in extra-curricular activities like art, craft, dance, gardening, tailoring, computer, sports etc., are also provided at the centre which aims at enabling a normal dignified life in the society for the inmates.
