Throughout the southern part of the western ghats, the southwest monsoon showers had been very intermittent, this year. However, monsoon showers have been much better in the hilly terrain, Valparai.
Presently, the streams and ponds in Valparai is flooded with water due to the heavy rains that has lashing down for the past two days. Birla Falls, Vazhaithottam, Nadumalai and Kulangal streams are flooded with water. Tourists are being restricted to bathe in the water bodies.
Until the beginning of July, the showers were almost next to nil in most parts of the region. But in the recent few weeks, Valparai has been consistently receiving moderate to high showers.
The Sholaiyar Dam which is an important source of drinking water to the people of Valparai has recorded an increase in water level to 63 feet against the full capacity 160 feet. Though, there is a long way to to reach the full capacity, this slow and steady rise of water has given hope for the people of the hilly terrain.
