Cleanliness is an area of concern for Indian Railways that needs a lot of improvement with the help from the rail passengers and other rail users. With a view to inculcate the habit of hygienity in the hearts of rail users and to improve the cleanliness in the railway premises, Salem Division, Southern Railway is carrying out regular awareness programs all over Salem Division.
Presently, in line with the guidance of the Hon’ble Minister for Railways Sri Suresh Prabhu, Salem Division is conducting a fortnightly Cleanliness Awareness/Propaganda Campaign in all railway stations and other railway premises from yesterday (16.08.2017) till 31.08.2017, with various themes for each day such as Swachch Awareness Day (Cleanliness Awareness Day), Swachch Samwad (Cleanliness Propagation/discussion) Day, etc.,
In the first day, yesterday (16.08.2017) that was observed as Swachch Awareness (Cleanliness Awareness) Day, in all the major stations, all stakeholders such as railway staff, railway cleaning staff, railway contract cleaning staff, passengers, cab/auto drivers who use Railway Stations, were assembled and a Cleanliness Pledge was administered to them by the Railway Officials/Supervisors. They took the pledge as to that they would remain committed towards cleanliness; that they would neither litter nor let others litter; they would inculcate the habit of cleanliness with their family, friends and others; etc. Pledge was undertaken at Salem, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, and Ooty. In Ooty, passengers also joined the pledge.

On the 2nd day today (17.08.2017) that is being observed as Swachch Samwad (Cleanliness Propagation) Day, Sri Hari Shankar Verma, DRM, Salem, administered the cleanliness pledge to the staff and officers in the Division Headquarters office at Salem. All the Officers and Staff gathered took a pledge that they would dedicate their time and energy in propagating cleanliness everywhere and the railway premises in particular, with a view to make the Nation clean.
