Cleanliness is an area of concern for Indian Railways that needs a lot of improvement with the help from the rail passengers and other rail users. With a view to inculcate the habit of hygienity in the hearts of rail users and to improve the cleanliness in the railway premises, Salem Division, Southern Railway is carrying out regular awareness programs all over Salem Division.
Presently, in line with the guidance of the Hon’ble Minister for Railways, Suresh Prabhu, Salem Division is conducting a fortnightly Cleanliness Awareness/Propaganda Campaign in all railway stations and other railway premises from today, the 16th to 31st August, 2017 with various themes for each day such as Swachh Awareness Day (Cleanliness Awareness Day), Swachh Samwad (Cleanliness Propagation/discussion) Day, etc.,

At all major railway stations, swachh Awareness Day was observed by all stakeholders from the railway department including railway staff, cleaning staff, contract cleaning staff, passengers, cab/auto drivers who took the Cleanliness Pledge administered to them by the Railway Officials/Supervisors. "We would remain committed towards cleanliness; would neither litter nor let others litter", they vowed.

In Salem Junction, the pledge was administered by Sri A. Vijuvin, Sr.Divisional Commercial Manager, Salem, and was followed by the Railway Staff and Contract Staff working in Salem Junction. Pledge was undertaken at Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, and Ooty. In Ooty, passengers also joined the pledge.
