Bengaluru: Bellandur lake froths again

All the efforts that were put into cleaning up of Bellandur Lake seemed to be a waste on Monday as, after a night of incessant rains, froth returned to haunt the residents around the lake. This time, the froth was worse than it has ever been before. Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) had been working to remove weeds growing in the lake after being pulled by the National Green Tribunal.

BDA, which is custodian of the lake, had deployed high-power pumps and installed coir foam mattresses and other filtering techniques to stop the frothing. Yet, last night's rain exposed the terrible condition of the lake as the froth returned.

The wave of froth, according to witnesses, was high enough to engulf a two-storied building.

Experts have established that the frothing in the lake is due to the discharge of sewage water containing household detergents. To stop it from frothing, the experts suggested building a sewage treatment plant and stopping raw sewage from entering the lake.

Turning a deaf ear to the suggestions of the experts, BDA went ahead with its weeding exercise and did little to stop pollutants from entering the lake.
