Footboard travel on MTC bus claims schoolboy’s life

Students fall as bus brushes past a roadside pole on Arcot Road in Vadapalani

Footboard travel snuffed out the life of a school boy when the bus in which he was travelling brushed against a roadside pole in Vadapalani on Friday.

Two students injured

Two other students were injured in the accident.

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) Bus (Route 27C) was crowded with passengers, including school students with some of them clinging on to the footboard.

When the bus was crossing Arcot Road in Vadapalani around 9.00 a.m., it had brushed past the pole erected in front of a private hospital premises on the roadside. In the impact, three boys fell from the bus one after another.

The victim, S. Subash, 17, used to travel on the bus daily from Nerkundram to Ganapathy Higher Secondary’s School in Kodambakkam. He was travelling on the footboard of the bus along with his friends.

Police said the MTC bus was driven in a reckless manner and in the process had hit the roadside pole.

The three students who fell on the road were profusedly bleeding.

Passers-by and other motorists rushed them to a private hospital and laterto Government Royapettah Hospital where Subash was declared brought dead.

His friends Jeeva, 16, of Nethaji Nagar and Karthik, 17, of MMDA Colony were undergoing treatment.

Bus driver arrested

The bus driver N.Parthiban, 30, was booked under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code for rash driving, causing injury to others and causing death due to negligence.
