Rs. 18.45 lakh distributed as incentives to sanitary workers engaged in collecting recyclable wastes.

The City Corporation has struck gold after initiating 100% source segregation on June 22 and the introduction of "Dry Wednesday" for the collection of dry and recyclable wastes. The Corporation has now started to generate high revenues through recycling the wastes which is in turn used to incentivise sanitary workers engaged in such massive source segregation operations.

Last Wednesday, the civic body achieved a dry waste collection of 209.77 tonnes and the same was sold for Rs. 5.2 lakhs.

Speaking on this initiative, Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan, CCMC, Commissioner said, "The Corporation has collected 1005 tonnes of dry waste in the past seven weeks and incentives to the tune of Rs.18.45 lakhs have been distributed so far to the workers engaged in the job of waste collection.

Wet and Dry wastes are collected using green and blue bins. While wet wastes generated would be collected on all week days except Wednesdays and Dry Waste will be collected only on Wednesdays (Dry Wednesday)".

"The collected Wet and Dry Wastes will be scientifically transported, processed and disposed. The new system has yielded the expected results" he added.
