Menace of non-biodegradable plastic covers, Corporation takes tough stance on establishments.

As per Plastic Waste Management Rules Gazette Of India No. G.S.R. 320 (E) dated 18th March 2016, plastic covers and bags less than 50 microns were banned for usage in the city and those who traders who deal in such covers were asked to upgrade to eco-friendly or biodegradable covers. The City Corporation passed a resolution to ban plastic covers less than 50 microns from May 1st 2017.

In the recent times, the City Corporation has been bombarding with awareness among the traders' community urging them to refrain from using plastic bags that are non biodegradable and also simultaneously insisting the public to carry their own bags for shopping. 

Officials from Corporation including the Corporation Commissioner, Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan on a regular basis inspect shops in every zone to inculcate the illness of plastic bags on the environment. The officials not only seize but also levy a spot fine to the establishments for using banned plastic bags along with stringent warnings. 

In the raid conducted between 29th June to 4th August by the Zonal Officials from the Corporation, 166 kg of plastic bags from 421 shops were seized. The team also collected a consolidated fine of Rs. 33500/-. 

"The raids would continue until non bio degradable plastic covers are completely eliminated from usage" said Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan.
