Call to revive ancient wisdom to avoid chemicals in Smart City and DevaraKaadu session

With most of the cleaning liquids used at home are made of chemicals, it has become almost impossible to eradicate those chemicals from our homes. Or has it? It is possible in fact to reduce the use of chemicals when we use natural particles to make our own cleaning liquids, a session on which was organised at Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science for Women here in the city on Saturday.

Jointly organised by Coimbatore Smart City Limited and DevaraKaadu from Bengaluru, the session titled Introduction to Natural Cleaners for Chemical Free Living aimed at creating a habit of using natural substances to make cleaners and also skin creams and other cosmetics.

Addressing the session, Smitha Kamath, Spiritual Ecologist at DevaraKaadu said that over consumption of natural resources has largely led to the decline of traditional wisdom in medicine and other fields.

“We have exploited our resources so much and now the law is not allowing us to make use of our own resources, the majority of which are in forests that have become protected landscapes now,” she said.

Claiming that over adoption of foreign technology has also led to the depletion or rather neglecting of our natural resources, Kamath warned that it was high time that we returned to our traditional wisdom.

Explaining the methods of making cleaners using bio enzymes, citrus fruit peels and jiggery, she opined that such practices would improve our health, the environment and would also be economical.

Various products including alternatives for shampoos, floor cleaners and lip balm were explained with practical classes to the students who had gathered there. Usage of reusable sanitary napkins were also proposed during the session.
