Metro stations to turn canvas for tourism

The soothing visuals of the mighty Jog Falls, or enticing images of the architectural marvels of Hampi may soon beckon you as you make a dash to catch the train.

The State’s Tourism Department has found the ideal promotional canvas for Karnataka’s tourist destinations: Namma Metro stations.

With the metro increasingly becoming a part of the ‘must-do’ list of residents and visitors in the city, the Tourism Department has tied up with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) to make use of the high-visibility stations to promote prime destinations. Namma Metro sees an average daily ridership of around three lakh, including a sizeable number of tourists.

Eleven stations on the Purple Line will see the promotional campaign take off. The small screens inside the trains already play visuals of destinations such as the Jog Falls, and classical music is played at some stations, but those were initiatives of the BMRCL.

The collaboration that the two departments worked on was the installation of the jamboo savari model outside the M.G. Road station.

N. Manjula, Director of Tourism, said a consultant would be hired to take the idea forward. “There are spaces in the stations, such as walls, passageways and the escalator walls. We will have 20,000 sq.ft. in 11 stations. We are looking for a consultant before deciding on what forms we will employ for the promotions. It could be anything from hangings from the roof to images on the walls,” she said.

The promotional material could also range from tourist destinations to activities in the State.

The design and installation could take a minimum of two months, Ms. Manjula added.
