Insisting on caution while handling news that relates with the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), A. Subburaj, Special Correspondent of Times of India, Coimbatore Bureau, has said that journalists should never write stories based on personal assumptions without evidence.

Speaking on Crime Reportage, at the Eighth Workshop for Young and Future Journalists, organised by the Coimbatore Press Club (CPC) at CPC office here in the city on Sunday, Subburaj added that such reporting would lead to legal actions on the journalist.

He informed that a journalist who handles crime beat should maintain good friendship with Police men from all level so as to get prior information about an incident.

“A crime reporter should go to the field and get news first hand. This will separate us from the rest and give more information,” he pointed out.

Subburaj also answered doubts and questions raised by participants. He was felicitated by senior member of CPC, Seenivasan. Students from various colleges in the city also participated in the workshop.
