Physiotherapists and students to observe fast demanding to constitute Physiotherapy council in the State.

Urging the Central and State Governments to constitute a Physiotherapy Council in the state, the physiotherapists and physiotherapy students in the city would embark on one day token fast on Sunday.

Dr. Rajesh Khanna, coordinator of the protest fast said that even though Physiotherapy has been in vogue as a medical discipline for 64 long years, the State Government has failed to streamline the profession.

Even as Delhi, Maharashtra, and Gujarat have Physiotherapy councils to streamline the professionals, Tamilnadu has yet to constitute one for the benefit of professionals who pass out of colleges and those who are working as physiotherapists already.

The recruitment of physiotherapists in Government hospitals in abysmal, and there are only 134 physiotherapists so far recruited and working in government sector, even as thousands of qualified ones are languishing without jobs.

The quack menace in physiotherapy has led to qualified ones losing their livelihood, as there is no law making body to check unqualified ones practicing physiotherapy.

World Health Organization stipulate one physiotherapist for 10,000 population but that ratio is not maintained due to non-recruitment of physiotherapists in Tamilnadu, they alleged.
