In a tragic incident, a sick leopard that had entered populated areas in Madukkarai died here on the outskirts of the city here on Tuesday.
According to Forest Officials, the leopard was found roaming in the forested areas for the past few weeks and it was reportedly sick. The animal had also reportedly attacked a few cattle in the area over a period of two weeks outside the reserve. Though the cattle had survived, the animal had continuously entered human habitats near Theethipalayam.
On Tuesday, it had entered a church in Madukkarai in the early hours and had stayed inside. An immediate search and rescue team was formulated under the Range Officer of Madukkarai and the animal was tracked down inside the church.
It was decided to tranquilise the scared animal and treat it for its sickness, however, the attempt proved fatal for the already sick feline that succumbed to the sickness.
“Further information would be revealed only after a post-mortem is conducted,” said officials.
