Future Gardens, a green initiative that was initiated by Merlin Stein from Germany aims to implement urban fruit tree gardens all over the city, has been inaugurated by the City Corporation along with other green NGOs.
With the sole purpose of making urban spaces more nature friendly, this initiative also aims to improve the air quality and green cover of the city besides providing place to play, to study, to relax and to meditate with a natural atmosphere for the urban denizens.
These fruit gardens thus created might help sustain the ecosystem for small animals and birds, which roost in fruit bearing trees.

On Van Mahotsav, the Tree Planting week, CCMC Commissioner Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan has inaugurated the first Future Garden in Ondipudur. This unique greening initiative by Merlin Stein would be supported by NGOs'- OSAI, Environmentalist Foundation of India, Kovai Vergal, the City Corporation and the Kasthuri Nagar owners association.
This “long-term gift for Coimbatore” was realized on a reserve site of the city Corporation. Passionate students of SBOA School conducted an environmental street play. About 20 different varieties of fruit bearing saplings have been planted by volunteers on the occasion.

The Coimbatore-based NGO “Food bank” will overtake responsibility for maintenance together with the Kasthuri Nagar Residents Welfare Association. Food bank distributes homemade food to the homeless people and the fruits which are grown in this garden will especially be used for distribution to the roadside needy people said.
