Work on steel bridge to start by July second week

The steel bridge at Shivananda Circle, which has been proposed to ease vehicular movement on Kumara Krupa Road, will soon become a reality with work on the project likely to commence in the second week of July.

With the tender for the project having been assigned, BBMP officials said that work orders would be issued in four days. The four-lane bridge will run along a length of 310 metres, and will be 16m wide, and is being developed at the cost of Rs 15 crore, which includes land acquisition.

BBMP engineers estimate that 26 trees would have to be felled to make way for the bridge, which will run along Hare Krishna Road - from the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce to the Seshwadripuram railway underpass. The bridge is also expected to reduce congestion on the stretch between Seshadripuram and Race Course Road.

With steel bridge proposals seldom leaving the drawing board, there's a perception that the projects are jinxed. However, realisation of the steel bridge at Shivananda Circle could see the jinx being broken. A similar project envisaged along JC Road has not taken off for more than a decade.

The state government tried to fasttrack another steel bridge project along Old Airport Road, but beat a hasty retreat following stiff resistance to the proposal.
