Medical Waste Management, need of the hour: Kerala Governor Sathasivam

With diseases changing pattern and communicable diseases spreading at a large scale, Governor of Kerala and former Chief Justice of India P. Sathasivam has said that doctors should take the responsibility of managing medical waste in order to curb such spreading of diseases.

Presenting the Golden Award of Encyclopaedia of Gastroenterology to Dr. C. Palanivelu, Chairman of Gem Hospitals in the city on Saturday, Sathasivam said that it was because of poor medical waste management that diseases were spreading.

“Responsibility lies with the doctors who are expected to create awareness among public in handling medical wastes and disposing them effectively,” he opined.

Throwing light on the growing technology in the field of medicine, Sathasivam also claimed that cost of medicine has also increased rapidly along with new inventions. He further stressed the importance of cost reduction so that the needy are benefited.

“The State Governments are introducing many health related schemes nowadays to reduce the money spent by people as treatments cost high. If the medical fraternity comes up with solutions to cost reduction, the needy would be benefited by and large,” said the Governor.

Reminiscing the days in which he worked hard to achieve in life, Sathasivam, quoting the life of Dr. Palanivelu said that only hard work would bring success.

“I congratulate Dr. Palanivelu on his achievements and the patrons who had decided to confer him with the award,” he said.

Receiving the award, Dr. Palanivelu explained his journey from the son of a farmer to the Chairman of a hospital.

The award was patronized by 13 organisations from various fields in Coimbatore. Representatives from various religious organisations were also present during the occasion.
