Coimbatore: A Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) of Police attached to Neelambur Police Station was found dead by suicide at his rented residence under the Sulur Police Station limits on the morning of Sunday, July 5.

The deceased, Manoj (54), hailed from Kannadi Gram Panchayat in Palakkad district of Kerala. He joined the Police Department as a Grade-II Police Constable in 1997 and had been serving as a Special Sub-Inspector at Neelambur Police Station since December 2025.

According to the police, Manoj had been living alone at a rented house in Royal Avenue near Kangeyampalayam for the past year after his wife and two sons returned to their native place in Kerala following family disputes. Preliminary enquiries suggest that he had been experiencing prolonged mental stress along with health-related issues.

Police said that around 5 a.m. on Sunday, Manoj sent a WhatsApp message to his elder son stating that he was suffering from severe body pain, mental stress and high blood pressure. He also reportedly expressed his intention to end his life and asked his family members to remain happy.

At around 9.30 a.m., a neighbour became concerned after noticing that Manoj had not stepped out of his house as usual. On entering the residence, the neighbour found him hanging from the ceiling fan using a nylon rope and immediately alerted the police.

Personnel from the Sulur Police Station rushed to the spot, secured the scene and informed the family members. During the enquiry, Manoj's elder son examined his mobile phone and found the WhatsApp message that had reportedly been sent before the incident.

After the completion of the inquest and other legal formalities, the body was sent to the ESI Hospital, Coimbatore, for post-mortem examination. The post-mortem has since been completed.

Police have registered a case and are conducting further enquiries to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident.

The Coimbatore District Police expressed their condolences to the bereaved family and extended their support during this difficult time.
