Tourist Alert: Southern Railway to Operate Additional Trains on Nilgiri Mountain Railway

In a boost for tourists visiting the Nilgiris, Southern Railway has announced the operation of additional special trains on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway between Mettupalayam, Udagamandalam (Ooty) and Coonoor from July to October in view of overwhelming public demand.


Coimbatore: In response to overwhelming demand from tourists, nature lovers, heritage enthusiasts and rail fans, Southern Railway has announced the continuation and expansion of special train services on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) connecting Mettupalayam, Udagamandalam (Ooty) and Coonoor. The additional services will operate on select days between July 7 and October 5.

Special trains between Mettupalayam and Udagamandalam will operate on Fridays and Sundays from July 10 to August 2. Train No. 06171 will depart Mettupalayam at 9.10 a.m. and arrive in Udagamandalam at 2.25 p.m. The return service, Train No. 06172, will operate on Saturdays and Mondays from July 11 to August 3, departing Udagamandalam at 11.25 a.m. and reaching Mettupalayam at 4.20 p.m.

Southern Railway has also announced special services between Udagamandalam and Coonoor. Train No. 06176 will run on Fridays and Sundays from July 10 to August 2, departing Udagamandalam at 2.50 p.m. and arriving at Coonoor at 3.55 p.m. The return service, Train No. 06199, will operate on Saturdays and Mondays from July 11 to August 3, leaving Coonoor at 9.20 a.m. and reaching Udagamandalam at 10.45 a.m.

Additionally, daily special trains will operate between Coonoor and Udagamandalam from July 7 to October 5. Train No. 06185 will depart Coonoor at 1.40 p.m. and arrive at Udagamandalam at 2.50 p.m., while Train No. 06186 will leave Udagamandalam at 3.10 p.m. and reach Coonoor at 4.20 p.m.

Southern Railway said the Nilgiri Mountain Railway continues to attract a large number of visitors throughout the year, particularly during weekends and holiday seasons. The additional services have been introduced to accommodate the growing passenger demand and offer greater travel convenience on the UNESCO World Heritage mountain railway.
