69 TASMAC Shops Close to Schools, Temples and Bus Stands to Be Shut Across Coimbatore

Tamil Nadu government has initiated action to close 717 TASMAC liquor outlets located within 500 metres of educational institutions, places of worship and bus stands across the State. In Coimbatore district alone, 69 TASMAC shops have been identified for closure within the next 15 days.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu government has ordered the closure of 717 TASMAC retail liquor shops functioning near educational institutions, places of worship and bus stands across the State.

According to a government release, the State-run TASMAC currently operates 4,765 retail liquor outlets across Tamil Nadu. Following the government’s directive, officials conducted a detailed inspection to identify shops located within a 500-metre radius of schools, colleges, temples, churches, mosques and bus stands.

The review found 276 TASMAC outlets near places of worship, 186 near educational institutions and 255 near bus stands, taking the total number of shops marked for closure to 717.

In Coimbatore district, there are currently 284 TASMAC outlets in operation, including 156 shops in Coimbatore North and 128 in Coimbatore South.

As part of the closure drive, authorities have identified 69 outlets in the district for shutdown within the next 15 days. This includes 48 shops in Coimbatore North and 21 shops in Coimbatore South.

Officials also confirmed that four TASMAC outlets — Shop Nos. 1557, 1603, 1846 and 1662 — have already been closed with immediate effect. Among them, Shop No. 1662 was functioning opposite the Singanallur Bus Stand in Coimbatore.

The government stated that the decision was taken keeping public interest and social welfare in mind.

Notably, a similar exercise was carried out during the previous tenure under former Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, during which 500 liquor outlets functioning near places of worship and educational institutions were shut down by the Tamil Nadu government in 2023.
