Coimbatore: Ahead of Vishu, the Malayalam New Year festival, 15 tonnes of vegetables and fruits have been exported from Coimbatore to Sharjah over the past five days, according to airport sources.

Coimbatore airport operates direct flight services to Singapore, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. Due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, direct flight services from Coimbatore to Sharjah and Abu Dhabi were temporarily suspended from March 1. Flight services to Sharjah resumed from March 9, with flights operating five days a week.

Despite failed negotiations between Iran and Israel, flights from Coimbatore to Sharjah continue to operate regularly. In this context, Vishu, the Malayalam New Year, is being celebrated on Tuesday, April 14. It is customary for large quantities of various vegetables and fruits to be transported on flights to help Kerala people living in Gulf countries celebrate the Malayalam New Year. This year too, 15 tonnes of fruits and vegetables have been exported from Coimbatore to Sharjah.

Speaking about this, airport sources said that usually garments, industrial products and food items are booked and exported from Coimbatore to Sharjah. During festival days like Deepavali and Onam, apart from regular goods, festival-related items are exported in large quantities. This year, Vishu, the Malayalam New Year festival, is being celebrated on Tuesday, April 14. In some places, it is celebrated on April 15. Over the past five days, a total of 15 tonnes of vegetables and fruits have been exported from Coimbatore to Sharjah to help Kerala people in Gulf countries celebrate this festival, airport sources informed.
