TIDCO to Lease Land at Varapatti for Aerospace and Defence Park

TIDCO plans to allot 260 acres of land at Varapatti, Sulur for an Aerospace and Defence Park. The 99-year lease allocation to companies will begin next month, aiming to boost manufacturing in the region.

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) is set to lease out parcels of land at the Aerospace and Defence (A&D) Park in Varapatti, Sulur taluk, Coimbatore district. The allocation process is scheduled to begin next month, with land being offered to various companies for setting up manufacturing units.

B Krishnamoorthi, project director of TIDCO, stated, "We obtained prior environmental clearance from the central government to set up the park. The allottable area is 260 acres, and the rest of the area will be used for the development of common facilities. Many major players have approached TIDCO for land allocation. We plan to allot the lands to the companies under a 99-year lease period from next month."

TIDCO has acquired 364.20 acres in Varapatti for the park, paying ₹108.76 crore for the land acquisition. Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati confirmed that the land acquisition was completed, and the district administration has handed over the land to TIDCO for further development.

The project aims to create a hub for aerospace and defence industries in Tamil Nadu. Krishnamoorthi added, "We are planning to create plug-and-play office space at Varapatti for many startups. This will become the first Aerospace and Defence Park in Tamil Nadu."

In addition to the Varapatti project, TIDCO is planning to acquire another 197 acres of land adjacent to the Indian Air Force (IAF) Station at Sulur Air Base for a second A&D Park. This land will be acquired from four villages: Kadampadi, Kangeyampalayam, and Appanaickenpatti in Coimbatore district, and Paruvai village in Tirupur district.

The second park is expected to play a crucial role in maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) activities near the Sulur Air Force Station. Several companies, including BHEL, aviation industries, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), have expressed interest in setting up units at the park.

Krishnamoorthi emphasized the potential impact of these developments, stating, "These industrial sectors will generate more employment opportunities in Coimbatore district, and the rural parts of Coimbatore will also grow rapidly."

The establishment of these Aerospace and Defence Parks is anticipated to significantly boost the manufacturing sector in the region and create numerous job opportunities for the local population.
